What is a Precinct Committeeperson, also known as a PCP?
Per ORS 248.015(1) A precinct committeeperson shall be a representative of the major political party in the precinct. A PCP is a link between the political party and the voters in a local election district. PCP's encourage voter registration, are a representative of the major political party in the precinct, vote on official party business, elect county party leadership, and nominate State Representatives or State Senators when there is a vacancy in one of those offices. One precinct committeeperson is allotted for every 250 voters, with a minimum of 2 precinct committeepersons per precinct. ORS 249.046 requires a member of the major political party to be a member of that party for 180 days before the primary election in order to be elected. PCP's are elected every two years, this occurs on even years, during the primary election. A PCP is not considered a public officer.
